Speaking up
My sister came up to visit...finally, after 15 yrs of me living here. Took her up to the mountains to show her the beauty of Oregon. After visiting one of the points of interest, we went to a quaint, historical cafe which used to be a stage coach stop way back when. It is located in a remote town in the mountains, near Crater Lake, population 60 including livestock!!! While sitting at 1 of the 4 tables in the dining room. waiting for our food, we both noticed that the couple behind us was eating in silence. Then we noticed, that the two couples at an adjoining table were having a vibrant conversation about this, that, recipes, current events etc. Then one of the gentleman at that table mentioned how he wouldn't be going to Ashland to visit because they had a Gay Pride Parade and, as he put it, "just the kind of things that those wacko liberals do." In my peripheral vision, the gentleman behind us, who hadn't spoken a word since we had been there, raised his hand & said "excuse me...but I'm one of the Waco Liberals that live in Ashland." Then, his wife raised her hand & said, "me too." I couldn't resist....I raised my hand & said "Me Too!" My sister, not wanting to be left out, the Republican that she is, raised her hand! The gentleman that made the statement, picked up the their check, left his companions, wide-eyed, as he went to the counter to pay. They got up & began to leave. As they all walked out the door, the gentleman who made "the" statement said to us "you all have a nice day now." To which I replied, "yeah, you too." Then, my sister & I struck up a conversation with the "quiet" couple behind us. During our conversation we learned that she was from NY, him from KY. They used to live in San Francisco. Then they moved up to Ashland, 26 years ago, to start their B&B business. So what you need to know is that just having lunch can be quite an experience!
